Pushkar Pilgrimage, Rajasthan

Pushkar Pilgrimage is revered as a journey to one of the chief holy places according to the Hindus. Pushkar is an integral part of the pilgrimage spots visited by devotees. Legends associated with Pushkar consider that Pushkar Lake was created out of a lotus flower that dropped from the hands of Lord Brahma.

One of the most sacred sites for the Hindus, Pushkar is a very ancient place. The antiquity of the place can be gauged from the fact that circumstances leading to its origin have been extensively dealt with in the ancient scripture of the Padma (Lotus) Purana. According to the text, Pushkar came into being, when Lord Brahma, Creator in the Hindu Trinity, dropped petals of lotus flower (pushpa) to earth from his hand (kar) to kill a demon. This resulted in the formation of three lakes in the desert land. The largest of these lakes is today revered as one of India's most sacred sites and bounded by temples and bathing ghats.

Foreign tourists and domestic pilgrims throng Pushkar during the fairs and festivals that are performed by local Rajasthani people. The festivals are steeped in religious and folk lore. Foreign tourist finds it a pleasurable welcome to watch the camel races and camel safaris that is undertaken in Pushkar. Moreover the different colorful Rajasthani attire and headgears enthralls them. Though Pushkar attracts tourists all around the year Pilgrimage to Pushkar is more rampant during the five days of Kartik Purnima. A dip in the holy water of the Pushkar Lake is a must for all the devotees.

The only temple in India dedicated to Lord Brahma is located in Pushkar. There are other temples, besides the Brahma Temple, in Pushkar that are dedicated to various deities belonging to Hinduism. The holy waters of the Pushkar Lake is considered to be capable of washing away the sins of people. A dip in the lake forms an important part of Pushkar pilgrimage.

Lord Vishnu is the preserver according to the Hindu mythology. The pilgrims flocking to Pushkar hold the Varah Temple in reverence. The idol of Lord Vishnu in the Varah incarnation inside the temple commands respect from all. The Varah Ghat, on Pushkar Lake, near the temple is also quite popular among the pilgrims.

A flight of stairs brings one to the door-steps of the temple. From this point, the tourists get to see the beautiful scenery of the surrounding lake and the landscape. The sand dunes that are found around the temple also attract the attention of the tourists.

Holy Dip in Pushkar
Holy Dip in Pushkar Lake is considered by the Hindus to bring them good luck and ward of all sins and evils. Pilgrims turn out in hordes every year at Pushkar to take a dip in the pure waters of the lake which is believed to contain medicinal and curative powers. One such occasion when there is a major rush is that of Karthik Poornima. It falls in the month of Karthik which is roughly around October and November. This period is considered to be particularly auspicious for a dip in the lake waters.

Hindus come to take a dip in the Pushkar Lake for redeeming their lives. The faith of the people is strong and so are their beliefs. Mortal sins are completely purged if someone spends three twilights in the city followed by subsequent dips at three ghats. Every Hindu looks forward to a dip in the Pushkar Lake once in his lifetime. Pushkar Lake ranks high amongst the holy places of India.

Pushkar Lake
Pushkar Lake is one of the major tourist attractions in Rajasthan and features on the itinerary of each and every visitor. Legend has it that the creation of the lake was the result of a lotus falling off from Lord Brahma's hand who was desperately seeking a place to carry out a religious ceremony and a fire sacrifice popularly known as a Yagna. Water immediately gushed forth from the spot and in this way lake came into being. more about Pushkar Lake
