History of Pushkar Festival lies in the Hindu scriptures. Pushkar itself is one of the five holy cities mentioned in the Hindu scriptures. The most remarkable thing about Pushkar is that the land houses one of the only two temples dedicated to Lord Brahma in India. Apart from that the city also has nearly 400 temples.
Pushkar is situated in the state of Rajasthan in India. Famous for the annual cattle fair, which draws an enormous amount of traders and tourists, Pushkar is a great place for travel. The Pushkar lake and the temples of Pushkar are revered among religious pilgrims.
An integral part of the history of Pushkar is related to Brahma and the Brahma Temple situated at the vicinity of the lake. Allusions to Brahma’s killing of the demon Vajra Nabh is refereed to. It is said that Brahma killed the demon with a lotus flower. Some of the petal of the lotus went haywire and landed in three places in Pushkar. A lake sprang up at the place where the petal landed. This is the origin of the Pushkar Lake. The scenic lake is believed to be the holiest in India. A dip in the lake is supposed to give you that ultimate salvation that all the pilgrims are looking for. Brahma temple is the only temple in India where Brahma is worshipped. Interestingly enough though Brahma is one of the holy trinity, he is not worshipped anywhere else in India or no temples are dedicated to him except in Pushkar.
Legend has it that the lake in Pushkar was created from the petals of a lotus flower which fell from the hand of Lord Brahma. Brahma is the residing deity in Pushkar and has a temple dedicated to him. The Brahma Temple in Pushkar is one of its kind in India. The legendary significance makes the lake of Pushkar an immensely holy place for pilgrims.
The city of Pushkar is also closely associated with the times of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. In later times, Pushkar was an important place of rule during the reign of the Mughal empire in India. It was the favored place of residence of many important Mughal rulers. Later Pushkar was annexed by the British empire, and it became one of the very few states in Rajasthan to be ruled directly by the British, the rest being princely states.
Therefore, the history of Pushkar speaks of its consistent importance and significance. It still is an important place in Rajasthan, India, and receives a large number of tourists and religious pilgrims every year. |
