Palampur is the tea capital of northwest India. Set on the rising slopes of Kangra Valley before they merge with the Dhauladhar ranges. But tea is just one aspect that makes Palampur a special resort. Abundance of water and proximity to the mountains has endowed it with mild climate. The town has derived its name from the local word "pulum', meaning lots of water. Palampur was a part of the local Sikh kingdom and later on came under the British rule.
Gorgeous, pretty and enchanting, these words would not suffice to express the ethereal beauty of Palampur, which is renowned for its fine quality of tea and celestial ambiance. A hilly resort with pristine surroundings, Palampur is nested within the majestic mountain peaks of Dhauladhar Ranges in the Kangra Valley. At 1219 meters, this sky resort flaunts a dazzling burlesque of light and shade with its terraced paddy fields, fertile tea plantations and the deep woods.
The place enjoys a healthy climate and the pine scented air is said to have curative properties. The scenery presents a sublime and beautiful contrast- the plain presents a picture of rural loveliness and repose, while the hills are majestic. Behind this town stands the high ranges of Dhauladhar Mountains, whose peaks remain, covered for most part of the year. Situated in and about the middle of the Kangra Valley, it is convenient base to explore the surroundings. This hill station is not only known for its numerous tea gardens and paddy fields but it also known for its colonial architecture and temples. Palampur and places around it are popular for adventure sports like hang-gliding and trekking.

Palampur has a mild climate and can be visited throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Palampur is between March to June and mid-September to November.
History
The name Palampur is a derivative of the term Pulum, which is synonymous with abundant water, a name that is aptly suited to the magnificent environ of numerous pour outs and torrents that interlaces the winding paths of the lush terrain of Palampur. During the monsoon seasons, these soft flowing brooks bloat and rave intensely over the entire girth of the gulch taking shingles and rocks all along with an uproarious noise.
Formerly Palampur was part of the Sikh Kingdom of Jalandhara and it came to limelight only in the 19th century when the British noticed its aromatic freshness and salubrious climate. As a matter of fact, the progressive Englishmen made this sleepy hamlet into a bustling center of trade and commerce. Palampur still houses its colonial elegance in the form of stunning mansions and palatial bungalows that reflects the classic look of the Victorian architecture.
Location
Palampur is located in the northwestern part of the state of Himachal Pradesh, in the northern region of India. It is situated in the Kangra valley, near the Dhauladhar ranges. It is located on an altitude of 1,220 m above sea level. Palampur is 30 km from Dharamshala. The weather in Palampur is moderate. Summers (April-June) are mild and winters (November-February) are cold but pleasant. It experiences southwestern monsoon rains in July-September.

In the month of March, Holi's riot of colours and celebration of spring comes with laughter and vitality. There are exuberant celebrations at Palampur and Sujanpur.
